Cafe Scientifique Welcomes Non-Fiction Graphic Novelist Jim Ottaviani
7pm
Schuler Books has teamed up with the Lansing Community College Science Department to bring you Cafe Scientifique, a monthly science discussion group. This month we are pleased to welcome back Ann Arbor non-fiction graphic novelist Jim Ottaviani! The last time he visited us we talked about his graphic biography Feynman, about physicist Richard Feynman. This time we'll be looking at his new book Primates: The Fearless Science of Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey, and Birute Galdikas. Illustrated by Maris Wicks, Primates is an accessible, entertaining, and informative look at the field of primatology and at the lives of three of the most remarkable women scientists of the twentieth century. These three ground-breaking researchers were all students of the great Louis Leakey, and each made profound contributions to primatology-and to our own understanding of ourselves.
Talk and Signing with much buzzed-about Michigan author Matt Bell.
7pm
Join us for a talk and signing with exciting up-and-coming debut novelist Matt Bell. With the publication of his 2010 short story collection How They Were Found, American Book Review said that "Matt Bell joins the company of the great fabulists like Franz Kafka, Jorge Luis Borges, and Italo Calvino." Now he is earning incredible praise for his debut novel In the House Upon the Dirt Between the Lake and the Woods, called a "gorgeous, bottomless book" by Ploughshares. Library Journal gave it a starred review and named it an Editor's Pick, while Publishers Weekly declared it "a dark, intriguingly odd fable... challenging, boldly experimental."

Baseball Author Double-Header!
1pm
We are pleased to offer a talk and signing with two fantastic sports authors about our favorite sport: Baseball! Doug Wilson is the author of the highly praised book The Bird: The Life and Legacy of Mark Fidrych, the first biography of the eccentric Detroit Tigers pitcher, rookie All-Star starter, 70s pop icon, and first athlete on the cover of Rolling Stone. The New York Post named The Bird a Required Reading title, Library Journal gave it a starred review, and Booklist called it "a compassionate, engaging biography of a player whose star shone brightly, if briefly."
Doug will be joined by Lugnuts broadcaster Jesse Goldberg-Strassler, author of The Baseball Thesaurus. Baseball is a sport with its own lingo and jargon--a colorful patois that's developed over the years and millions of games. In this fascinating compendium of baseball terms, Jesse Goldberg-Strassler--broadcaster, storyteller, talker, voice--explains what baseball terms mean and how they came to be.
